My December reading list
Oh December! We have gone through a lot to get here, haven’t we? There is so much to enjoy about the ritual of closing a year, but my favourite ritual of all has to be the compilation of my December reading list. I have got this down to a science. I start off the month comforting, cozy and thrilling and then move into more literary reads as the month progresses, ending the month and year with something uplifting, or even some self help!
Here is my December reading list, and please let me know what you have lined up!
Comforting slice of life books
The Correspondent, Virginia Evans - I have heard so much about this book! I read a sample last night and knew it was exactly the reading mood I am after for December.
Wreck, Katherine Newman - I adored her novel Sandwich last year, which was funny and tragic in equal measure. She’s an auto-buy for me.
Time of the Child, Niall Williams - Rich, slow and thoughtful writing set in an evocative small Irish town, and set over Christmas time! If you haven’t read This is Happiness, read that one first.
(If you haven’t read Bad Luck Penny, it is finally on Kindle and probably falls into this category.)
Cozy, slightly surreal books
Best Wishes from the Full Moon Coffee Shop, Mai Mochizuki. I have been a joyful captive of Japanese cat literature since reading the first book in this series. I don’t really care what the storyline is. I just want more cats, astrology and moonlit coffee!
The Enchanted Greenhouse, Sarah Beth Durst. I have never read cozy fantasy before, but I love plants and seem to be enjoying more magic in my books, so this looks like a good start.
Thrilling
The Strange Case of Jane O, Karen Thompson Walker sounds like it will scratch that Silent Patient itch.
Literary
Taking me into January, but I just cannot wait for our very own South African Nadia Davids’ Cape Fever. I am sharing the Amazon pre-order link here (this helps authors immensely) but also consider ordering a copy from your local bookstore.
Self-help
This will probably be an illustration book or a guide on how to use Procreate, because I am trying to find my own illustration style at the moment!
Hope you have a wonderful last month of 2025.
xx
Amy
